Archdiocesan Principal's Meeting and Retreat
From Wednesday last week, I attended the Annual Archdiocesan Principal's Meeting and Retreat.
The day commenced with the Directors' Day led by the Director of Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn, Ross Fox and other Senior Leaders. During the day, we examined the system priorities, analysed system data, and had a well-being update (an ongoing emphasis in our Archdiocese). I feel blessed to be part of a system that supports principals and schools with quality professional learning and system-led priorities based on research and data.
On Thursday and Friday, I had the pleasure of participating in a Retreat led by former Master of the Order of Preachers, Dominican Priest Father Timothy Radcliffe. Father Timothy has written a vast array of books, and he was awarded the Michael Ramsey Prize for theological writing in 2007. He is an Honorary Doctor of Divinity at the University of Oxford and has honorary doctorates from twelve other universities. He is also a Consulter for the Pontifical Council of Justice and Peace and recently ran the synodal gatherings for the Pope.
Father Timothy is a great orator. He captivated his audience with profound insights and relevant stories to highlight the core pillars of encounter, discipleship, mission, and leadership. His address connected deeply with all the Principals and Senior Catholic Education staff, emphasising the essence of these principles in fostering vibrant, connected, and authentic Christian communities rooted in love, service, and faith.
Ensuring Digital Safety
In today's digital age, our children are immersed in a world where technology plays an increasingly significant role in their daily lives. While the digital landscape offers many benefits, it also presents various challenges, especially concerning the safety and well-being of our children. As parents, we must remain vigilant and actively monitor our children's online activities to ensure their safety and security.
In Australia, we are fortunate to have access to numerous resources and support networks dedicated to promoting online safety for children and families. One such resource is the eSafety Commissioner (www.esafety.gov.au), a government agency committed to empowering Australians to have safer, more positive online experiences. The eSafety Commissioner provides a wealth of information, including practical tips, guides, and educational resources tailored to parents, educators, and young people.
The Office of the eSafety Commissioner also offers the eSafety Guide, an online portal designed to help parents and carers navigate the digital world safely with their children. This comprehensive resource covers topics such as setting up parental controls, managing privacy settings, and having open conversations about online safety.
As parents, we must actively engage with our children about their online experiences and establish open lines of communication. Encourage your children to share any concerns or issues they encounter online, and reassure them they can come to you for support without fear of judgment.
Let's prioritise our children's digital well-being and ensure they have positive and enriching online experiences.
NAPLAN Week is Underway!
We are thrilled to announce that NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) commenced this week, and our students have embarked on this important assessment with enthusiasm and positivity.
NAPLAN is an essential nationwide assessment that provides valuable insights into our students' literacy and numeracy skills. It, along with other assessment forms, helps us understand their strengths and areas for growth, enabling us to tailor our teaching strategies to better support their learning journey.
While NAPLAN week may bring some nerves and anticipation, let us reassure our children that what matters most is their effort and perseverance. Regardless of the outcome, participating in NAPLAN provides valuable learning experiences and opportunities for growth.
If you have any questions or concerns about NAPLAN or your child's participation, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Events
If you follow St Matthew's on social media, you will notice that recently, we have had a wide array of learning experiences in which our students participated. From a CSYMA Journey with Jesus Retreat, a visit from Kenny Koala and author Fiona Lloyd to Drumming and Oztag workshops, we try to provide a well-balanced educational experience for your child.
Coming soon, we have a Year One excursion to the Botanical Gardens and a Year 5 Excursion to the National Zoo and Aquarium, Belconnen Representative Swimming Carnival, Kids Lit Excursion, Futsal Gala Day, Crazy Hair Day Project Compassion Fundraiser and a Harmony Day Presentation. Please keep an eye on the school calendar and the Compass portal for details of events that include your child.
In truth and love,
Sarah Lowe

Oztag Success!
Ethan, Sidney, Nicky, Isaac, and Riley from Year 5 joined their team for the summer season of Tag Rugby. The team remained undefeated for the whole season and won their grand final this week. They had great fun and showed great sportsmanship and skill during all of their games.
Congratulations, boys!
